Polonia is the runner-up! Important win with Śląsk
After three matches without a win, Black Shirts reached for the coveted set of points. The match with Śląsk II Wrocław held suspense until the very end, but after the final whistle of the referee, it was the Polonians who could celebrate. With the 2:1 win, we advanced to second place in the table, giving us a direct promotion to Fortuna I Liga.
– At the end of the season no one is going to remember if we have played against ten or eleven rivals. It is a very important win – rejoiced Black Shirts assistant coach Maciej Wesołowski at the post-match conference.
The favorite was one. Polonia has been at the top of the table for a long time and is aiming for promotion, while Śląsk’s reserves is a team from the relegation zone, whose dream is to avoid demotion to the III Liga. However, the rivals, led by former WKS player Krzysztof Wołczek, set the bar much higher than expected. The first half was fairly even, with both elevens creating dangerous situations for each other. Fortunately, it was our team that was the first to hit the net. After a good pass from Michał Fidziukiewicz in the 33rd minute our captain Łukasz Piątek, with a stoic peace, scored in the net. A moment later, in a harmless situation, Śląsk’s player Jehor Macenko behaved very irresponsibly by kicking Bartosz Biedrzycki hard in the head. The referee, without any hesitation, pulled out a red card from his pocket. The stands fell silent in terror, but fortunately our young player walked away from this dangerous situation without much harm. We went down to the locker room with a one-goal lead and a one-player advantage. However, it turned out that it was not the end of emotions.
– If we had played eleven, Polonia would have had big problems. I am very happy with my team’s attitude, we fielded one of the youngest line-ups in this season of the II Liga. Even with ten players, they scared the rivals – said Krzysztof Wołczek. Indeed, the second half’s scenario was not obvious. Despite playing weakened, Śląsk evened the score in the 67th minute after a scramble in the goal area. Our team, led in this match from the bench by Maciej Wesołowski, due to the suspension of Rafał Smalec, has however reacted impeccably. Introduced to the pitch moments earlier Michał Bajdur, crossed perfectly on the head of Marcin Kluska, who scored his second goal in his second consecutive match.
Until the end of the match, both teams had their chances, but the result remained without change. Two absolute debuts in our team are worth highlighting – the entire match was played by a 20-year-old Filip Balcewicz in defense, and in the second half Grzegorz Aftyka appeared on the pitch. – The competition for a place in the defensive between Eryk Mikołajewski and Filip Balcewicz is fierce. Filip has already presented himself well in the winter. We will analyze this performance carefully and make a decision on the line-up for the match against Znicz – says Trainer Wesołowski. At the match there were more than 160 new fans, who took advantage of the Open Stadium campaign, thanks to which new supporters receive free tickets. Thank you and we are asking for more!
